Environmentalism has always been an important issue for surfers. Yet even the most environmentally progressive surfers are forced to deal with the fact that their foam and fiberglass surfboards are depleting non-renewable resources and causing serious health problems for shapers and glassers.
In 2006 an estimated 13 million pounds of non-recyclable, non-renewable petrochemical products will be used in surfboard production. That's equal to the weight of 46,000 barrels of crude oil. In fact, five years' worth of surfboard petrochemicals exceeds the weight of the oil spilled in the Gulf of Alaska by the Exxon Valdez. With many of these surfboards quickly breaking and ending up in landfills the situation is not acceptable.
Unlike our competitors, Varial uses 21st century composite technology to achieve real results towards environmental friendliness. SixD surfboards contain 90% fewer petrochemicals by weight than a foam and fiberglass surfboard and have recyclable cores. We have also eliminated the use of cancer-causing liquid resins in our manufacturing process, thereby protecting workers from the many health hazards associated with traditional surfboard construction.
